Psychologist fees, Medicare rebates and funded options
Know what you are likely to pay before you book. A standard 50-minute individual psychology session is $195. With a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan and eligible referral, the current Medicare rebate for a registered psychologist is $101.55, leaving a gap of $93.45. Eligible NDIS and approved WorkCover/TAC sessions can be billed directly with no out-of-pocket cost.

You do not need a referral to see a psychologist privately. If you are eligible for Medicare rebates, private health insurance, NDIS funding or an approved workplace or transport-accident claim, the amount you pay may be lower. Choose the option that best describes you below.

A valid Mental Health Treatment Plan and eligible referral are required to claim Medicare rebates. Eligible clients can generally access rebates for up to 10 individual mental health sessions in a calendar year.

A limited number of Meyer Access Rate appointments are available on selected weekdays for Health Care Card holders, pensioners and people experiencing financial hardship. Availability is reviewed after six sessions.
The Meyer Access Rate is not available for assessments, formal reports, couples counselling or services paid by a third party.
How Medicare claiming works
1. Confirm eligibility. Ask your GP or referring practitioner whether a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral are appropriate for you.
2. Provide your referral. Send the valid referral details before or at your first eligible appointment.
3. Pay the session fee. Payment is due in advance or on the day unless another arrangement has been confirmed.
4. Claim your rebate. Where available, Meyer Institute can lodge an electronic Medicare claim after payment. Medicare determines eligibility and pays the rebate to your registered bank account.
You can also book privately without a referral. Contact your private health insurer directly to check whether your policy includes psychology rebates.
Payment, cancellations and third-party funding
Payment
Payment is due in advance or on the day of your appointment, unless Meyer Institute has agreed to direct bill an approved third-party funder.
Cancellations and missed appointments
Please give at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations with 24–48 hours’ notice may incur 50% of the scheduled fee. Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice and non-attendance may incur 100% of the fee. Funders may not cover cancellation charges, so you may be personally responsible. We consider exceptional circumstances fairly.
Third-party funding
Funding approval must be confirmed before direct billing begins. If a funder does not pay an eligible charge, we
will contact you before taking the next step.

Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
No. You can book privately without a referral. To claim a Medicare rebate, you need a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan and eligible referral.
What is my Medicare gap?
For a standard 50-minute individual session, the fee is $195. If you are eligible for the current $101.55 Medicare rebate, your gap is $93.45. The eligible Meyer Access Rate gap is $48.45.
How many Medicare psychology sessions can I claim?

Is telehealth the same fee?
Standard individual telehealth and in-person sessions use the same fee unless we confirm otherwise before booking. Medicare and funder eligibility rules still apply.

No. You cannot claim both Medicare and private health for the same psychology session. Ask your insurer which option gives you the most suitable rebate.
Is NDIS psychology gap-free?

Are WorkCover and TAC sessions gap-free?
