For GPs, Specialists and Referrers

Referring to Meyer Institute

Dear doctors, specialists, allied health professionals, schools, support coordinators and referrers,

Thank you for considering Meyer Institute for your client or patient. We aim to make referrals straightforward, responsive and clinically useful, with clear communication, practical recommendations and evidence-based psychological care.

Meyer Institute provides registered psychology services for children, adolescents and adults. We offer psychological therapy, counselling, cognitive and IQ assessment, ADHD assessment, Autism assessment, learning disorder assessment, memory assessment, adaptive functioning assessment, NDIS-related psychological reports, WorkCover psychological support and telehealth psychology across Australia.

We are particularly well suited to referrals where there is a need to better understand a client’s cognitive profile, learning needs, executive functioning, neurodevelopmental presentation, emotional wellbeing, functional capacity or support requirements.

How to refer

Referrals can be made by GPs, psychiatrists, paediatricians, allied health practitioners, schools, NDIS support coordinators, WorkCover providers, insurers, parents, carers or clients directly.

Clients may also self-refer for private psychology appointments and assessment services. A formal referral is not required for private appointments. However, a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, specialist referral, WorkCover approval, NDIS funding pathway or insurer documentation may be required where the client wishes to access rebates, funded sessions or formal reporting.

To help us triage appropriately, referrals should ideally include:

  • Client name, date of birth and contact details

  • Reason for referral

  • Relevant diagnosis or provisional diagnosis

  • Current symptoms and functional concerns

  • Current medications, if relevant

  • Risk concerns, if any

  • Relevant developmental, school, work or psychosocial history

  • Previous assessments, reports or treatment history

  • Funding pathway, such as private, Medicare, NDIS, WorkCover or insurer

  • Whether the request is for therapy, assessment, reporting or diagnostic clarification

Suggested referral wording

For psychological therapy under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, GPs may refer for:

Psychological therapy for anxiety, depression, stress, emotional regulation difficulties, adjustment issues, ADHD-related difficulties, Autism-related support, workplace stress or other mental health concerns.

For assessment referrals, please specify the main assessment question, such as:

Cognitive/IQ assessment, ADHD assessment, Autism assessment, learning disorder assessment, adaptive functioning assessment, memory assessment, NDIS-related psychological assessment, or functional capacity information.

If both therapy and assessment are being considered, please state this clearly so we can guide the client toward the most appropriate pathway.

Psychological therapy

Meyer Institute provides evidence-based psychological therapy for anxiety, depression, stress, emotional regulation, adjustment difficulties, relationship concerns, life transitions, school and workplace challenges, ADHD-related difficulties, Autism-related support, trauma symptoms, burnout and general wellbeing concerns.

Therapy may draw from approaches such as CBT, ACT, DBT-informed skills, person-centred therapy, strengths-based practice, motivational interviewing, psychoeducation and practical skill development. Treatment is tailored to the client’s presentation, goals and support needs, with a focus on improving insight, coping skills, emotional regulation, confidence, functioning and quality of life.

ADHD, Autism and neurodevelopmental referrals

We welcome referrals where ADHD, Autism or broader neurodevelopmental factors may be contributing to difficulties with attention, concentration, executive functioning, organisation, emotional regulation, sensory sensitivities, social communication, learning, behaviour, school participation, work functioning or daily life.

Helpful background information may include developmental history, school reports, previous assessments, family observations, teacher feedback, workplace concerns, previous diagnoses, medication history and functional impacts.

Assessment may assist with diagnostic clarification, treatment planning, school adjustments, workplace accommodations, NDIS documentation and a clearer understanding of strengths, challenges and support needs.

Cognitive, IQ and learning assessments

Meyer Institute provides cognitive and IQ testing for children, adolescents and adults. Referrals may be appropriate where there are concerns about intellectual functioning, giftedness, learning difficulties, academic achievement, literacy, numeracy, memory, attention, cognitive strengths and weaknesses, or the need for school, university or workplace recommendations.

Assessments may include clinical interview, standardised psychometric testing, review of relevant background information, written reporting, feedback and practical recommendations.

These assessments can be useful for diagnostic clarification, education planning, learning support, NDIS evidence, workplace accommodations and understanding a client’s functional profile.

NDIS-related referrals

Meyer Institute can assist with psychological assessment and reporting relevant to NDIS applications, reviews and support planning. Referrals may involve psychosocial disability, Autism, ADHD, intellectual disability, cognitive impairment, adaptive functioning concerns or broader disability-related support needs.

For NDIS-related referrals, please include the client’s diagnosis or suspected disability, current supports, previous reports, functional impacts and support needs across daily living, communication, learning, social interaction, emotional regulation, self-care, work, study and community participation.

WorkCover and workplace psychological support

We accept referrals for clients experiencing workplace stress, psychological injury, trauma symptoms, anxiety, depression, burnout, adjustment difficulties, pain-related psychological impacts, reduced confidence or return-to-work concerns.

For WorkCover or insurer referrals, please include claim details where available, the nature of the workplace injury or stressor, current work capacity, relevant certificates, treatment history, risk concerns, return-to-work considerations and any reporting requirements.

Telehealth psychology

Meyer Institute offers telehealth psychology by secure video or telephone where clinically appropriate. Telehealth may be suitable for clients across Australia, including those in regional, rural or remote areas, clients with transport barriers, clients requiring flexible access, or clients seeking continuity of care.

Some assessment tasks may be available by telehealth, while other standardised assessments may require in-person or hybrid arrangements depending on the nature of the referral question.

Who may benefit from referral?

Referral may be appropriate for clients experiencing:

  • Anxiety, depression, panic, stress or burnout

  • ADHD, Autism or executive functioning difficulties

  • Learning difficulties, school concerns or academic underperformance

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Behavioural or developmental concerns

  • Cognitive, IQ, memory or adaptive functioning concerns

  • NDIS-related psychological assessment or reporting needs

  • WorkCover or workplace psychological injury

  • Adjustment issues, life transitions or relationship stress

  • Functional impairment at home, school, work or in the community

Important information

Meyer Institute is not an emergency or crisis service. If there are immediate safety concerns, clients should contact emergency services, a crisis line, their GP, local mental health triage, or attend the nearest emergency department.

Reports, letters and assessments may involve additional fees depending on the nature of the request. Legal or court-purpose assessments are not routinely provided unless specifically agreed in advance.

Next steps

Referrers can send a referral letter or ask the client to contact Meyer Institute directly. Once received, we will guide the client toward the most appropriate pathway, which may include therapy, psychological screening, formal assessment, telehealth, in-person consultation or a brief pre-appointment enquiry.

We value collaborative care and welcome communication with referrers where the client has provided consent. Our goal is to provide clear, practical and clinically meaningful support that assists clients, families, schools, GPs, support coordinators and treating teams to move forward with confidence.
