NDIS Psychology Therapy for Capacity Building, Independence and Well-being

Meyer Institute provides psychology therapy for NDIS participants where psychological support is linked to disability-related goals, functional needs and everyday participation.

Therapy may focus on emotional regulation, anxiety, stress, adjustment, social participation, self-management, confidence, coping skills, relationships, communication and support-team collaboration.

What NDIS psychology therapy can support

  • Emotional regulation and coping skills

  • Anxiety, stress, mood and adjustment difficulties related to disability impact

  • Social confidence, communication and relationship skills

  • Self-management, motivation, routine and planning

  • Building confidence to engage in community, study, work or meaningful activity

  • Supporting carers, families and support workers to understand practical strategies

  • Psychological barriers that make NDIS goals harder to achieve

  • Transition points such as leaving school, changing accommodation, starting work or adjusting to diagnosis

How therapy is different in an NDIS context

NDIS psychology should be linked to functional goals.

NDIS psychology is not just a general counselling session. It should be connected to the participant plan, disability-related needs and practical goals such as independence, emotional regulation, social participation, self-management, communication, study, work or community life.

At intake, we clarify the participant goals, the support category, plan management type and any reports or reviews that may be needed.

Therapy process

1. Referral and plan details

We gather the NDIS number, plan dates, plan management type, goals, funding category, support coordinator details and main therapy concerns.

2. Initial psychology assessment

The psychologist discusses history, goals, current supports, strengths, barriers and what meaningful progress would look like.

3. Capacity-building treatment plan

Therapy goals are translated into practical skills and strategies that can be used at home, school, work, appointments or in the community.

4. Review and reporting

Where needed, Meyer Institute can provide progress summaries, review information or recommendations relevant to NDIS goals and supports.

FAQs

No. Medicare psychology is funded through Medicare referral pathways. NDIS psychology should relate to disability needs, participant goals and capacity building or maintenance of functional skills.

Can therapy be done by telehealth?

Yes, telehealth may be suitable for many participants, depending on clinical suitability, communication needs and plan arrangements.

Can the psychologist speak with my support coordinator or GP?

Where clinically appropriate and with consent, Meyer Institute can liaise with referrers, GPs, support coordinators, plan managers and other supports.

Can reports be provided?

Where appropriate, reports or progress summaries can be provided. The scope, purpose and funding for report writing should be clarified before work begins.
