Psychology Assessments & Therapy FAQs
Clear answers about psychology assessments, evidence-based therapy, telehealth, fees, referrals and appointments in Melbourne and online across Australia.
What is the difference between an assessment and therapy?
A psychology assessment answers a specific question about cognition, learning, attention, autism, memory, adaptive functioning or diagnostic clarification. Therapy is an ongoing, collaborative process focused on emotional wellbeing, behaviour, relationships, adjustment and practical change. We can help you choose the most appropriate pathway.
Which psychology assessments are available?
Assessment pathways may include IQ and cognitive testing, ADHD assessment, autism assessment, dyslexia and learning assessment, memory assessment, executive-function assessment, adaptive or functional assessment, and complex diagnostic clarification. The tools used depend on age, referral question and clinical suitability.
Can I access appointments online?
Yes. Telehealth psychology appointments are available Australia-wide, including New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, the ACT and Northern Territory, as well as regional and remote communities. Suitability for online assessment depends on the referral question and test requirements.
Where are in-person appointments available?
In-person appointments are available in Melbourne, with online options for Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and regional Australia. Contact us with your postcode and we will explain the most practical appointment options.
Do I need a GP referral?
You can enquire or book privately without a GP referral. A valid Mental Health Treatment Plan may provide access to Medicare rebates for eligible therapy appointments. Assessment funding and rebates vary, so please check the fees page or ask before booking.
What happens after I send an enquiry?
We review the service you selected, your appointment preference, postcode and any message you provide. We then contact you to confirm fit, likely next steps, timing and relevant fees before an appointment is finalised.
How much do appointments cost?
Fees vary by service, appointment length, assessment complexity, report requirements and funding pathway. Current pricing, Medicare rebate information and common inclusions are available on the Psychology Fees & Rebates page.
How do I book?
Use the online booking page for available psychologist services, or send the quick enquiry form on the homepage if you would like guidance first.
Do you accept NDIS, WorkCover, TAC, DVA or victims-of-crime referrals?
Some services may be available under NDIS, WorkCover or workers compensation, TAC, DVA and victims-of-crime funding, subject to eligibility, approval, clinician fit and the documents required by the funding body.
Will I receive a report and recommendations?
Where included in the agreed service, assessment reports explain results in practical language and provide evidence-based recommendations. Scope, recipients, consent requirements and expected turnaround are confirmed before assessment begins.
Is therapy based on CBT?
CBT is one evidence-based model that may be used. It explores how thoughts, feelings, behaviours and physical responses interact, and translates that understanding into practical strategies. Therapy is tailored to your goals, preferences and clinical needs.
