What the Western Australia Work and Development Permit is
The WA WDP is an alternative way to satisfy eligible court fine debt when a person is experiencing hardship or disadvantage. Activities can include unpaid work, medical or mental health treatment, drug and alcohol treatment, education, vocational or life-skills courses and mentoring for a person under 25.
An approved sponsor submits the application through the WA process and supervises or verifies the activity. The scheme does not convert an ordinary infringement notice into a treatment pathway; the debt must meet the court-fine and enforcement criteria.

How psychology may fit
Mental health treatment can be an approved WA WDP activity and may be provided by an appropriately registered practitioner, including a psychologist. Treatment must be clinically appropriate and approved before credit begins. Reporting and consent arrangements must be agreed with the sponsor.
Program credit reduces eligible fine debt. Psychology fees are separate. We confirm fees, cancellation terms and any available Medicare or private-health rebates before you book.
Important limits
WA WDP applies to eligible court fines after a Notice of Intention to Enforce. Ordinary infringement notices and activity completed before permit approval do not qualify. The credit rate and approved activity are confirmed through the WA Department of Justice before treatment begins.
How to get started
1. Confirm the debt is an eligible WA court fine and a Notice of Intention to Enforce has been issued.
2. Find an approved sponsor and provide information supporting the relevant hardship pathway.
3. Have the sponsor submit the WDP through the approved WA process and wait for approval.
4. Complete approved activity after the start date so the sponsor can report credit correctly.

Do not send identity documents, bank statements or detailed family-violence or trauma records through the website form.

GPs, health practitioners, lawyers, community legal services, financial counsellors, caseworkers and existing sponsors/providers can use the enquiry form. FAQs
Can an ordinary WA infringement go on a WDP?
No. The WA WDP page states that the scheme applies to eligible court fines, not general infringement notices.
How much credit can mental health treatment receive?
As at 22 October 2026, the WA Department of Justice lists $70 per hour for approved medical or mental health treatment. Confirm the current rate and permit approval with your sponsor before starting.
Can past psychology appointments be counted?
No retrospective credit should be expected. Only activity after the WDP is approved can be counted.
Who can be an approved sponsor?
Eligible organisations and individuals, including some registered health practitioners and sole traders, can apply. Approval must be obtained before the role is advertised.
Does an approved WDP pay the psychology invoice?
No. The permit reduces eligible court fine debt. Clinical fees and rebates are separate.
Where can I get urgent help with a WA court fine?
